Having dry eyes is the epitome of that statement. They sting, burn, hurt, and are just maddening to deal with. A bottle of eye drops can offer temporary relief, but it’s usually only a short time before the uncomfortable sensation returns and we encounter the irritation again.

With a wide array of causes, dry eye syndrome is very common. The culprit behind the syndrome can be anything from age or autoimmune diseases to hormonal changes or even certain types of medications. All of these causes affect two types of glands that are responsible for keeping eyes moist and comfortable.

Lacrimal glands – These glands produce tears, which are a very diluted saltwater substance. Tears are the main component of a thin liquid layer that coats the eye. Not only do they keep the eye moist but they also help protect it and flush out any debris.

Meibomian (Tarsal) glands – Located around the rim of the eyelids, these glands produce an oily lipid substance called meibom. This substance forms a layer over the liquid layer containing the tears and keep the tears from evaporating too quickly.

When either of these two gland types are affected, it can lead to dry eyes. If the lacrimal glands aren’t functioning properly, not enough tears are being produced to keep the eyes most. If the meibomian glands are affected, not enough meibom is being produced and that causes the tears to evaporate at a quicker rate, leading to dryness.

While omega-3 deficiency isn’t considered a direct cause, a deficiency of omega 3 fatty acids raises the risks of experiencing dry eye syndrome. A 2005 study published in the American Society for Clinical Nutrition found that those with a high omega-3 intake had lower rates of dry eye syndrome. On the reverse, those with a low intake of omega-3 had higher rates of the syndrome. The reason for this is due to inflammation. Dry eyes are often accompanied by the red and puffy hallmark of inflammation, but inflammation is not only a symptom of dry eyes. A few recent studies have shown that inflammation is actually a cause as well.

Dry Eye ReliefInflammation targeted around the lacrimal glands can damage the glands and decrease tear production. Omega-3 was seen to counteract this in a 2011 study, where tear production was increased. Seventy percent of the study participants were experiencing no symptoms by the end of the study period.

The meibomian glands and inflammation can lead to some uncomfortable problems. Not only can dry eyes result from the inflammation but it may also cause styes and infections within the glands. When the meibomian glands become inflamed, the composition of the meibom is altered. The amount of saturated fats increase while the unsaturated fats decrease. As a result, the meibom changes in consistency and can clog the glands. This increases the risk of infection and hinders the gland from releasing meibom. Over time, the glands may become permanently scarred and experience long-term malfunction.

Omega-3 anti-inflammatory qualities have been shown to improve the health of the meibomian glands, preventing complications like dry eye syndrome. A couple studies showed that with omega-3 Fish Oil supplementation, the composition of the meibom improved. This created the optimal protection against tears quickly evaporating to leave the eyes dry. There was also a reduced risk for the glands clogging or suffering permanent damage from inflammation.

When looking at what the science has said, omega-3 Fish Oil is a good long-term treatment for chronic dry eyes. In one study, almost every symptom of dry eyes -including burning, stinging, dryness, and the sensation of a foreign object in the eye – was reduced with omega-3 supplementation. Some symptoms were reduced by as much as fifty percent.

Eye drops can temporarily relieve dry eye syndrome, but the symptoms return shortly. Omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, work from the inside to stop the mechanisms that lead to dry eye syndrome by fighting against inflammation and providing dry eye relief. It can lead to sustained relief from dry eyes and prevent reoccurring dryness.
